Gargowan No. 35 Gin

Introducing Gargowan No. 35 Gin!

Gargowan marks the beginning of the Ayrshire Hospice’s story. Named after the historic villa at 35 Racecourse Road, which has been home to the Hospice since 1989, it symbolises a lasting commitment to providing care and support across Ayrshire and Arran. Crafted in partnership with Isle of Cumbrae Distillers, this gin celebrates the region’s rich heritage and the spirit of community that lies at the heart of the Ayrshire Hospice.

Gargowan No. 35 is infused with botanicals of rhubarb, raspberry, orange, and elderflower, creating a truly delicious gin. Elderflower, a powerful symbol in Celtic mythology representing the cycle of life and death, was chosen to reflect the Hospice’s role in supporting individuals and families through life’s most profound transitions with care, dignity, and compassion.

About the Distillery

Isle of Cumbrae Distillery was first established in 2019 by five ladies with a passion for the island. These five women came out of retirement to create something new and exciting on Cumbrae. They had a five-year plan where after they would pass the torch.

They passed the torch to Caroline and Struan after a chance encounter. Caroline and Struan have been in the spirits industry for years in various role and were delighted to be part of this opportunity.

“We are both born and raised in Ayrshire and have had experiences with hospices and how cancer drastically effects people’s lives. We are honoured and privileged to be a part of this journey with Ayrshire Hospice.”

About the Bottle

We wanted to create a visually striking and meaningful label for Gargowan No. 35 gin that reflects the spirit of the Hospice and the beauty of the Ayrshire region. It has a vibrant design with a few hidden ‘Easter Eggs’ that reveal new aspects with each viewing.

Being in Ayrshire, it was key for us that a coastal theme is essential to the design. It showcases the beauty of Ayrshire’s coastline, while subtly reinforcing the connection between the Hospice’s service area and our partnership with Isle of Cumbrae Distillers.

The design also includes key landmarks from around the Ayrshire region, representing the full breadth of the area the Hospice serves.

The floral elements seamlessly woven into the design hold special significance to both Ayrshire and the Hospice. Forget-Me-Nots are a feature in Hospice fundraising appeals, representing remembrance and connection. The addition of magnolia blossoms symbolises new beginnings, hope, and contemplation, in line with the Hospice’s new Magnolia Room (a contemplation space) at our traditional home in Racecourse Road, Ayr.

About the Artist

Martina Martin is a digital artist based in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire. Her work explores vivid, abstract representations of the natural world, often drawing inspiration from the emotional impressions left by landscapes, seascapes, and shifting skies.

Working in a digital medium allows Martina to experiment freely with form and colour, translating fleeting moments like the hue of a sunset or the curve of a coastline into bold, expressive compositions. Her art is guided not only by what she sees, but by how the world around her makes her feel; each piece becomes a visual echo of those inner responses.

Martina’s creative process is intuitive, rooted in observation and an ever-evolving relationship with nature’s palette. While inspired by the natural world, she often pushes the boundaries of traditional colour, using vivid and unexpected hues to heighten emotion and invite new perspectives.

Through her work, Martina hopes to stir a sense of connection between the viewer and the natural world, between memory and feeling and to encourage a moment of pause, wonder, or recognition in the abstract.

“I wanted to create the effect t

hat someone is standing from a garden or area looking down upon the coastline. Using the castles still to frame the foreground.”

This year, I am taking part in the Glasgow Kiltwalk, Edinburgh 5k and Edinburgh 10k, to raise money for Ayrshire Hospice in memory of my amazing Aunt Liz. The care and compassion the Hospice provided to my family and I during such a difficult time, was second to none.
